Overview

Atticus Coffee & Gifts is more than just a coffee shop; it’s a cherished Spokane institution nestled at 222 N Howard St, where community, craft, and charm intertwine effortlessly. Since its founding by local book lovers Andy and Kris D. in 2009, this cozy spot has blossomed into a vibrant hub—not only for exceptional coffee but also for handpicked gifts and local art that radiate heart and soul. Its recent transition to new owners, Wendy and Beau, has only deepened its connection to Spokane’s culture, blending stellar café service with a carefully curated boutique atmosphere.

Walking into Atticus, you immediately sense a warm and inviting space that welcomes a diverse crowd—from locals dropping in for their morning cortado or maple pecan scone, to visitors searching for unique gifts with character. The café side boasts beverages made with 4 Seasons’ locally roasted Atticus Blend espresso, an A+ rated choice known for its rich, smooth profile. Whether you’re savoring a buttery croissant alongside a classic caramel macchiato or opting for the refreshing Gibraltar Buttercup, each cup reflects a dedication to quality and consistency. The menu’s breadth, including standout drinks like the café latté, dirty chai, and iced coffee, caters well to varied palates, and the bakery offerings elevate the experience with fresh, thoughtfully crafted pastries.

What truly defines Atticus is its fusion of coffee culture with community values. The space feels like a living story—a blend of local art, quirky gifts celebrating Spokane’s vibe, and shelves stocked with books and curiosities that invite discovery. Sara Broderius’ revelation about finding the perfect cat-themed gift captures the shop’s delightful surprise factor, making it equally a haven for those seeking thoughtful presents or simply a soulful cup of coffee. This blend of retail and refreshment creates an inclusive environment where guests often find more than they expected, whether that's a moment of calm, a friendly chat, or a meaningful keepsake.

Many patrons, such as longtime fan J, praise not only the high-quality food and drinks but also the genuine warmth of the staff. Atticus’ team is described as approachable, knowledgeable, and eager to make every visit special, underscoring how much of the café’s magic comes from people as much as product. This is echoed by Taya Kelsey, a former employee whose heartfelt reflections highlight the leadership’s commitment to creating a boutique atmosphere rich in kindness and meticulous care. The management’s focus on hospitality shines through in every detail—from the carefully orchestrated retail displays to consistent drink excellence and quick resolution of hiccups, as Michael Doud experienced firsthand.

Atticus Coffee & Gifts serves a broad audience: the local community valuing familiarity and connection, casual visitors in search of a memorable cup, and gift hunters looking for something unique, especially those enchanted by local arts and culture. Its blend of quality coffee, inviting space, and eclectic retail items makes it a go-to destination for anyone who appreciates authenticity with a personal touch.

In sum, Atticus stands as a testament to Spokane’s heart—where passion for coffee meets a love for community, art, and meaningful experience. Whether it's your first visit or a routine stop, expect to leave with warmth in your cup and a story in hand.

Went with a friend for coffee and mentioned she needed to get a gift for a family member who really likes cats. As we were walking in, I looked around and said "if you can't find the perfect cat lady gift here, it doesn't exist". I am thrilled to report i was 1000% correct. Great coffee, cute shop (including TONS of non-cat lady type gifts). Worth checking out.

I absolutely love this place! I've been there several times and the vibe is always warm, welcoming and inclusive. The food is good and the drinks are amazing. The staff are always super cool and helpful. Sadly, I no longer live in Spokane. However, when I called with questions about the tea there, Brendon was incredibly helpful and friendly. The aesthetic of Atticus is delightful, but it's the people who create the feel of a place. Atticus is truly one of my favorite places.

* Biased review. I was a cafe employee of 2 years ~ '22 to '24 * Atticus Coffee and Gifts is a Spokane staple. Let's talk about why! A Short Atticus History: - In 2009, 222 N Howard St was bought by Boo Radley founders, local kindhearted "Spoka-loons", and self-proclaimed book nerds, Andy and Kris D. - In 2023, after careful consideration, Atticus Coffee and Gifts was sold from Kris and Andy to local Spokanites, Wendy and Beau. - Wendy, with her impressive background in consignment, oversees the bulk of retail. With help from raining heavyweight champion, (retail manager) Kaylee Gaines-McGee, Atticus Coffee & Gifts is made beautiful.Together, with help of retail staff, they cultivate a peaceful boutique atmosphere; displaying books, local art, cups, t-shirts, knick knacks, gifts, and quality coffees & teas for sale. - Beau, with a strong background in warehouse labour, oversees the cafe side of things with long-term Stronghearted cafe manager; (bad***,) Jamie Freedman. - To this day Atticus continues to partner with 4 Seasons. Their famous espresso roast, "Atticus Blend," is bought directly from 4 Seasons roasters. 4 Seasons is local to Eastern Washington. 4 Season's Better Business Bureau (BBB) Rating is an impressive A+! [PERSONAL SIDE-NOTE: I worked personally with Beau for his first year of experience working cafe. I have nothing, if not respect for him. Beau is affable, hardworking, humble, and always learning; always curious. Beau is a personal role model of mine. If I were to ever stumble into becoming a small business owner, I would like to be like Beau. In my eyes, he's got the makings of a warrior hero. He's courageous, and disciplined, yet he remains compassionate and kind. Don't be fooled by his unassuming nature. He has the heart of a lion, and the will of a titan. To Beau, thank you for your presence. May your path be blessed.] Fate had plans in mind, so Atticus and I parted ways in 2024. To this day, this remains my favorite job I ever worked. Whenever I have the chance to visit my hometown, Spokane, I like to stop at Atticus Coffee & Gifts on Howard St. When I order, I know that no matter what I order... - If I'm drinking my go-to cup of espresso, - If I'm sipping on a cuppa tea, - If I'm treating my sweet tooth with a chai latte, (or, if I'm lucky enough to come during the holidays,) - I'm downing a cup of hot local apple cider during the autumn, - Or tasting a famous eggnog latte between 'Turkey and Christmas', I know I'll never disappointed, (And they'd always be happy to remake my drink if I was.) Heck! Maybe I'd buy a treat on my way out! Maybe I'll walk out with a fun book, or a collection of postcards, or a mug inspired by local artist legend Harold Balazs in his artstyle, radically exclaiming "TRANSCEND THE BULLS***!" Or... Maybe... Just maybe... I'll stumble upon a little unexpected something. Maybe I'll find the thing, the thing! The thing I didn't know I was looking for! The thing that will make a ???????????????????????????? sentimental gift for one of my closest, dearest friends. When I go into Atticus, I know I'm going to be treated with hospitality, respect, and a smile. I love this store, but most importantly; I love the people who work here. I love the people who visit. I love the new faces, the old, and the energy that moves and breathes through this space. To Atticus' Ownership, Management, and Staff; Thank you. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I love y'all! Thanks for all the fish! (Wait! I meant espresso!! ) Godbless, - Taya Fin Shango Laughing Kelsey

Great coffee and friendly service. They accidentally forgot my wife’s bagel, but caught it right away and made things right without hesitation. Really appreciated how they handled it—definitely a spot we’ll come back to when in Spokane.
